What will my job be like?

Medical secretaries perform administrative duties in a medical office or in a health-related industry, such as insurance. Duties may include word processing, data entry, reception and database management, as well as interaction with vendors and patients. Sensitivity to confidential matters is required.

Where could I work?

Most medical secretaries are full-time employees who work a standard 40-hour week. However, office work can lend itself to alternative or flexible working arrangements, such as part-time work or job sharing.

What is the future of this career?

The BLS projects that demand for these professionals will grow by 3-5 percent nationally between 2023 and 2033 — about as fast as the average for all occupations. Expansion of both the health care and social assistance industries, along with an ever-growing patient base will likely contribute to this strong growth, the bureau notes. Federal health care legislation, like the Affordable Care Act, will probably contribute, too, since it boosts the share of Americans with access to health insurance.

Type of Education/Training

Medical secretaries can receive education through academic programs at many community colleges in the state. However, high school graduates who have basic office skills may qualify for entry-level secretarial positions.
