What type of education and/or training do I need?

A nursing home administrator completes a 4-year program and receives a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution. In addition, applicants must successfully complete at least 100 course hours in areas relevant to long-term care administration.

Do I need a license or certification for this career?

Licensure is required in the State of Connecticut.
Prerequisite: Licensure requires baccalaureate degree and approved course of study, or approved master's degree.

What is the salary for this career?

$75,000 and Higher

What will my job be like?

A health care administrator/manager plans, directs, coordinates, and supervises the delivery of health care. These managers establish and implement policies, objectives, and procedures for their departments; evaluate personnel and work; develop reports and budgets; and coordinate activities with other managers.

Health services managers in health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and other managed care settings may additionally do more work in the areas of community outreach and preventive care than managers of a group practice may.
Generalists manage or assist in the management of an entire facility or system. Specialists are in charge of specific clinical departments or services

Most nursing home administrators work in offices located in the nursing homes. Others work in the business offices of large nursing home corporations that manage several facilities.
